College Chiq to Office Wear

Whether we like it or not, we are graduating college and going to the real world. Some of us maybe avoiding this transition by going to graduate school, joining the peace corp for a year, or hitch hiking across Europe. Regardless, we will have to address reality eventually. Simply, some of our clothes are not going to make it to this next phase of our lives. However, this doesn’t mean you have to donate everything. You may not realize that some of the clothes you have acquired over the course of eight years (if you count highschool) can join you in the professional world. Rather than start from scratch. Lets dig through your closet and separate the gems from your donation box.

Jeans: Some of you may be happy to know that some jobs have casual Fridays! This means you can take a break from dress pants, skirts, and dress. This doesn’t mean you go over board and show up in acid wash jeans. In stead keep dark jeans that are not torn.

Rachel Zoe Rachel Jean $150

Cardigans: These are perfect staples for the office. Keep in mind, most of us will be working in doors. During the summer months, it is freezing inside and boiling outside. Instead of freezing to death, leave one at your desk or in you car. To avoid showing too much skin from a lace tank or fun dress, you can use the cardigan to cover your shoulder and back.

ModCloth Fine and Dandelion Cardigan in Pink $39

Blouses: A nice top can be paired with a skirt or dress pant. As long as it doesn’t expose cleavage. You can put this in the keep pile.

BCBGMAXAZRIA White Stretch Cotton Trimmed Yoke Tailed Shirt $70

Lace Cami: These sweet tanks you bought to dress up your shorts and skirts can be worn under your blouse. This way, if you want to open a few buttons, the girls are tucked away. Also to avoid back skin, you can leave them tucked or untucked. The choice is up to you.

FULL TILT Tiered Lace Womens Tank $21.99

Skirts: To stay out of trouble, make sure your skirt doesn’t go past the top of your knee.  Also, make sure you sit appropriately. This may seem like common sense, however, when you are wearing jeans, pants, and Capri’s you don’t have to worry about showing anything.

ModCloth Watercolor Canvas Skirt $64

Leggings: Do you hate stockings? I can’t stand them. They are irritating. Plus, if you rip them, you are screwed. It’s hard to hide the whole. If you take them off, people will notice. To stay away from stockings, you can wear leggings with your boots! If you do this, make sure the leggings tuck into your boots.  Also, you can wear knee-high leggings under long skirts. In this situation you want the leggings to be shorter than the skirt. This way, when you sit down, people will not see your leggings.

ModCloth Perfect Pairing Leggings in Black $19

Flats: Yes! Those flats you decided to buy instead of six-inch stilettos for nights out with the girls can join you in the office world! In addition, they are perfect for jobs that do not permit open toed shoes. Flats come in fun colors and are easy to slip in and out of.

ModCloth Sunlit Garden Flat $29

Boots: Solid color heeled boots are perfect for fall and winter months. These can be your first line in defense from the bitter cold. Remember, your wardrobe has to adjust with the weather.

Steve Madden Belbotm Shooties $97

  1. I don’t remember getting a lot of new clothes for work after I graduated. As a fashion design major I guess my wardrobe was already pretty dressy! My mom bought me a great suit though, which i still have to this day!

    1. Initially, I planned to go to school to be a designer. Instead, I decided to join the army and took on Professional Writing and History. I’m glad I did, I can still write about fashion. In highschool I took a lot of fashion courses for my electives. Hopefully, once I more settled in my apartment, I can start making clothes/handbags again. I have a sketch book full of clothes I’d like to make one day.

  2. Love this post! I remember when I made the transistion – it was so hard to find ways to modify my casual wardrobe into something more office appropriate. I found that I had a lot of nice pants and skirts, but my tops just seemed a little cheap. I started investing in nice silk blouses (which can be worn alone), and well structured blazers (which can cover up cheaper tops). A new scarf can also go a long way to classing up an outfit with a minimal investment.

    1. Thank your for adding more items to the list! I decided to write this post because I took on an internship at Leadership Wilkes-Barre in Pennsylvania. Since its a business casual office, It cut my outfit combos in half. Shopping for any transition can really burn a whole in your wallet. To save some bucks for everyone, I decided to share some tips I’ve picked up.
