When Did Black Friday Become Black Novemeber

Not so long ago, Black Friday was a gruesome battle for savings. In the U.S., people impatiently waited for retailers to open their doors. The violent frenzy led to injury. On rare occassions, a few people passed away. The build up to the mayhem comes from marketing and a bit of luck. Ads and commercials defined the potential items of the season coupled with Black Friday discounts. Who can forget Cabbage Patch Dolls and Tickle Me Elmo…

Black Friday is not what it used to be. It makes sense. Due to fluctuating cost of living, people became more mindful of their transportation, entertainment and holiday budget. Consumers are shopping with a purpose. With Black Friday discounts limited to specific items, the desire to be first in line decreases. The birth of Cyber Monday made it possible to recieve discounts from home. As a result, the cyber holiday has gradually grown in popularity as well. How do you bring customer back to the store?

Start Black Friday sales early. At first it was Thursday Night. Not a big deal right? That depends on how you look at it. Some stores set up up sales the night before. Thanksgiving’s main event is the feast. The gathering time varies. It is feasible to start Black Friday early. However, someone has to be there to sell goods.

Now, some businesses advertise Black Friday rates throughout the month of Novemeber. The deals and items vary daily/weekly. Does this change compensate for the decrease of swarms of people standing outside stores the day after Thanksgiving?

Yes, they do. One, ads help people price match and determine when items are marked down. Two, Thanksgiving is a feast. Meaning, guests and/or family members are waiting for the feast to start. Why not get some shopping done? Some families treat the holiday like a luncheon. So, there is time to enjoy the meal, go shopping, and come back for seconds. It’s not a bad set up…for the consumer. Again, someone has to pack it, ship it, stock it, and ring it up. All things considered, is Black November better than Black Friday for workers?
