Soothing cooking sessions and international grocery shopping trips are vlogs that I like to watch. It’s interesting to see how others shop around the globe and cooking techniques. These videos made me realize that I have a flashy apron that I barely use. It’s not like I haven’t used an apron before. Aprons were a part of my uniform in previous customer services jobs. They aren’t useless. Sometimes, they protected my clothes. Others had convenient pockets for essentials. So, why is mine hanging up like a knick knack?
Truthfully, I didn’t grow up seeing people use them. Adults in my life didn’t use them for daily or special occasion cooking. I started cooking and baking early. By my teen years, I was tall enough bought and mature enough to use the stove and oven with little to no supervision. This new responsibility didn’t inspire me to get an apron. I didn’t consider buying one till I left the nest.
When you step out on your own, there’s a rude awakening. Your new place doesn’t come with essentials. College housing kind of brings that to light, but furnishing a dorm is very different from furnishings a home. Now you have to budget to handle all your new responsibilities with a pinch of fun to make all this working worth it. Again, I didn’t grow up using an apron. So, it wasn’t a necessity to me. Like I mentioned early, I associated aprons with jobs not my home life. When I decided to buy my own, it was for fashion not protective wear.

In a way, my “Baker’s Gonna Bake” apron was too cute to use. Although it’s a bit wrinkled in the pic, that apron is five years old. It’s managed not to fade much, because I stored it in a kitchen draw. That made it out of sight, out of mind. Since we’re creatures of habit, your not going to put an occasional item in the way of things you use daily. As a result, I’d forget I had an apron, which put my clothes at risk of stains from cooking and chores.
This year, I decided to hang up my apron. I’m still not great about using it daily, but it’s in my line of sight. Now, I’m more likely to wear it. Since it is cute, I do want to get more aprons that I don’t mind getting dirty. They can be hard to find. Unless you go to a speciality store in the U.S., aprons are cooking garments scattered at random points throughout the store. That’s how I found my baking apron. The colors caught my eye and ended up in the cart. I had not intention of buying it. So it was kind of a impluse buy.
