Webtoon Implements Fast Pass Ad Unlock For Ongoing Series

Last year, I had to stop Fast-Passing. Price hikes and a plethora of binge worthy series was getting out of hand. So, I stopped paying attention to the amount of Fast Pass (Upcoming) Episodes, my favorite series had. Then, last month I started noticing extra text in the Fast Pass subheader. Turns out series that had at least 5 Fast Pass Episodes, let readers watch ads to unlock 2 Episodes. This is a nice compromise. People can get a little ahead on their favorite series and loyal Fast-Passers can save some coin.

Ad Unlock Isn’t Permeant

There is a 72 Hour time limit to read each unlocked episode. Where as Daily Pass Episodes give you 2-weeks. Although it will be available to read free on its publication date. Originals that become Daily Pass lock roughly 95 percent of their episodes. Fast-Passed Episodes remain unlocked because readers already paid for 3 to 7 Coins to Unlock them. Like the two below, a majority of the Webtoon Originals I’ve read became Daily Pass Completed Series.

Webtoon Original Creators Get Access to Ad Revenue

Initially, the Ad Unlock option was only available for Canvas Creators. If they met certain qualifications, Webtoon locked qualifying episodes for 7-days. Readers could watch the ad or wait for it to unlock. I’ve watched ads for Canvas Creators. So, doing that for Webtoon Originals was not a big deal to me. I believe Ad Watch was added to Webtoon Originals, because of the decline in Fast Pass.

Either way, I believe it’s a smart way to bring former bingers back into the fold. However, binge readers must pay attention. Some series stop offering AD Unlock and swap it with Discounted Coin Unlock. If you’ve been As Unlocking out of habit, you might spend some of your Coins by accident. Sure it’s not the full value of the episode, but it’s more than the Daily Pass rate.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, I appreciate the Fast Pass Ad Unlock. I read about several series every day. So, Fast Passing all of them is fiscally irresponsible. Since Digital ownership is being manipulated in other industries, I’m more hesitant about spending money for Coins on a company that can change it’s policies at anytime. While it’s still available, I plan to take advantage of Ad Unlock.
