If you’re a Webtoon Canvas Supporter, have you noticed the super like heart at the bottom left of your screen? This new addition threw me off, because it reminded me of YouTube. When a creator goes live on that platform, users can donate/give the creator money.
This gives the creator a special notification,which typically causes them to shout-out the supporter. That’s not exactly how that Super Likes works, but it does give Webtoon Canvas Creators extra monetary support per published episode.
How Does It Work
Supporters can anonymously purchase Super Likes with Webtoon Coins, which is unusual for Webtoon Canvas. Because, Canvas Webcomics are free to read. Typically, Webtoon Canvas Supporters don’t use Webtoon Coins for these episodes.
Technically that hasn’t changed. A Super Like cost between $1 to $10, which is 5 to 50 Coins. Since 7 Coins is the highest someone can pay to unlock a fast pass episode. This means a $10.00 Super Like is 7 times more than a Fast Pass Webtoon Originals. Also, Eligible Webtoon Canvas Creators can display their top supports monthly.
To my knowledge, that’s not an available feature of Webtoon Originals with faithful Fast Pass Readers. Yes, they didn’t Super Like it, but they did pay in advance for something they could of read for free. Just food for thought. To be clear, a Super Like is only good for one episode. Your not Super Liking the entire series.
Current Restrictions
According to Webtoon Support, Super Likes are only available on eligible Webtoon Canvas series on the English-language platform. The program is expected to come to Webtoon Originals in the second half of 2024. Since there’s an age restriction for purchasing Super Likes, Super Fans may only be 18+. Unfortunately creators that don’t cater to the English-language platform are out of luck on this one.
Final Thoughts
Turns out, Webtoon plans to enable Super Likes for Webtoon Originals later this year. I can’t say I’m surprised. Ad Unlock started with Webtoon Canvas. Then, they found away to implement with Webtoon Originals, Daily Pass Series, and Completed Webtoon Originals.
As promised, Webtoon Originals are now eligible for Super Likes. In my opinion, this transition was soft launched. These likes are green; whereas, Webtoon Canvas Super Likes are pink. It makes me wonder if Canvas is used as a soft launch with Originals in mind.
This year’s updated Canvas Monetization Programs has caused creators to abandon their series. Afterall, Canvas Creators are essentially free labor. Webtoon gives them a place to publish their work and build an audience.
That audience size impacts what Monetization Programs their eligible for; including Super Likes. For many, the desire to keep creating doesn’t out weigh the reality of a need for a stable income. It’s unfortunate but understandable.
