Pharrell is one of my favorite creators. He is so multi talented that giving him one title would diminish the value of the others. In fact the first album I bought with my own money was N.E.R.D. Ride or Die. Their music video, She Wants To Move, was my gateway to their alternative album. From their I really started paying attention to Pharrell’s career.
As a producer and featured artist, he’s played a major role in early 00s and 10s and that’s just what he openly gets credit for. Let’s not get started with the hold he has on Despicable Me and The Minions. The music in these films have already become a part of my kids childhoods. When I stumbled across Universal’s Piece by Piece trailer, I was ecstatic.
Lego You’ve Don’t it Again!
A Lego Documentary about Pharrell was a combination no on saw coming. And yet, it feels natural. Up to this point, Universal and Warner Brothers have released Lego Remakes of popular movies, comics, and games. Creatively, Piece By Piece is a vibrant and unexpected way to share Pharrell’s story and I am here for it!
Since the setting is the Lego Universe, Lego Characters that have been a part of Pharrell’s journey can be voiced by the real person. This allows Piece By Piece to invoke escapism while being grounded in reality.
Final Thoughts
If you’re curious, Piece By Piece is PG. So Parental Guidance is advised, but Pharrell isn’t excluding his younger fanbase. I see it as parents sharing their interest with their children in a format that’ll enjoy. Plus, it’s only 1 h and 33 min, which is pretty reasonable for an audience that may have children present. When the Lego appeal starts to faid, the musical aspect of it can keep the audience engaged.
The movie debuted over the holiday weekend (Indigenous People’s Day). I know Summer is still hanging out for some of the U.S. If you want to get the fam out of the house and keep them cool, make a family day of Piece By Piece.
