Sewing Kits Are Terrible For Heavy Duty Mending

Does it feel like you’re going to have to extend the life of your wardrobe, but a tailor is out of the question for small repairs? Believe it or not, mending isn’t terribly difficult. It’s more about the repetition of motion and the patience to see it through. What’s the quickest way to set yourself up for failure, the extremely thin string and brittle needles.

To be frank, man sewing Kits that are scattered throughout stores have the thinest needles and weakest string. Companies conceal that by putting them in pretty cases. Whether it’s see through or has a lovely print, I don’t advise buying these for a novice or an experienced sewer. The novice won’t have the tools needed to get started. The experienced sewer will be offended you don’t know where to get their supplies.

Where To Go And Why

Now, you don’t have to go to Michael’s or Hobby Lobby to get what they need. In fact, you’re more likely to get overwhelmed by these craft stores. Like any store, their designed to get you to spend more money then you planned. Instead, I suggest going to Walmart or Target. That’ll at least limit you to a section that has a variety of crafting materials but a smaller selection of what you need.

What Brand To Buy Instead

I’ve used STINGER needles for several decades. Their strong and come in various sizes. Currently, I’m using the SINGER Heavy Fabric Repair Steel Hand-Sewing Needles with pouch, because it came with 7 needles. As far as thread goes, I like to use Cloak & Clark. Their thread comes in a variety of colors and durability.  Collectively these two items cost less than a generic sewing kit. That being said, I recommend buying sewing pins. These are needles meant to hold fabric in place while hand sewing or using a sewing machine.

Final Thoughts

Although 2025 is around the corner, I believe it’s important to build new skills that help maintain your lifestyle. Sewing maybe seen as crafting, but mending is a useful skill that comes out of it. When your repair is done, there’s a sense of accomplishment that comes with that. Health issues aside, hands are more scrolling and typing. I won’t lie and say it’s easy.
