First off, can we take a moment to appreciate how adorable this remastered Link is. His chibby and colorful appearance looke much better than the pixelated (1993) original. Yes, I know we wouldn’t have this astheically pleasing one without the other. Sadly the glow up didn’t help me beat the game. If your unfamiliar with Gameboy Color game mechanics, you might struggle with (2019) Link’s Awakening. I grew up playing Nintendo, Super Nintendo, N64, Game Boy Color, and Beyond. I’m just horrible at precise aim games.

Think of it this way. We got 3-D graphics with 2-D controls. So you don’t get a 360° attack style that’s more common with The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and forward. I’m not talking about Zelda games for Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance. Because a majority of those games follow Link’s Awakening format. I’m talking about games made for N64, Game Cube, Wii/WiiU, and Nintendo Switch. When it comes to boss battles, Twilight Princess, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom are more forgiving than Link’s Awakening. So, why does that matter. Well, I can’t defeat Slime Eye!

This annoying Boss doesn’t look menacing. Yet, it’s stopped many players from advancing. You know why? Because you have to slash it in half, which turns it into two mini bosses. Sounds easy. Here’s the thing. The final slash must be center mass. This is why I say 2-D layouts Nintendo Games like this are not forgiving. No matter how many gamer discussion boards that I read, I can’t split it in half. Mind you, it can take a minimum of three splits to reduce Slime Eye to one manageable mini boss. YouTube videos didn’t help me either. It’s not their fault. It comes down to the gamer.
In case your curious I have this off center issue with recent games like Skyrim, Resident Evil, and Call of Duty. If I want to see the rest of Link’s Awakening unfold, I’ll have to watch a walkthrough. If done right, they’re enjoyable. Since you’re not watching over someone’s shoulders, you get the first person full screen experience. That’s if the player doesn’t provide color commentary. I don’t mind commentary for instructional purposes. Since I’ve got other games to play, I haven’t actively searched for a Link’s Awakening Walkthrough.
