What’s On My Nintendo Switch: Dragon Quest Builders 2

To be honest, I don’t really care about Dragon Quest Folklore, I’m here for the building. It actually reminds me of Minecraft, but more aesthetically pleasing. Chibi characters creating infrastructure. The apprentice builder tries to improve their standard of living, as well as, keeping monsters at bay. I know that’s an over simplification of the game. So, I’ll give you a better breakdown of the game.

Overview

You’re an apprentice builder that was abducted by monsters. You’re next exactly sure where you’re going, but the ship is in shabby conditions. So, your captives demand you to make repairs. It’s a good way to learn basic controls and the game won’t progress without your cooperation. In the end of this prologue, the ship will take on water. You try to fix it, but ultimately the ocean wins (yes, you still have to try and keep the water out).

You wash up on The Isle of Awakening; where you meet Malroth (Lord of Destruction). You, the Lord of Creation, befriend Malroth, because you both have amnesia. So, y’all are figuratively on the same boat. Both of you discover a bratty survivor.  Long intro short, the three of you discover this island is for the Lord of Creation. To make this island inhabitable, you must visit other islands for supplies and inhabitants (people, animals, and sometimes monsters ) willing to relocate to The Isle of Awakening. Sounds simple right?

Nope, it won’t be that easy. Story mode islands towns are being terrorized by Children of Hargon, a cult that outlaw all forms of creation. Basically, you can’t improve your islands standard of living without solving their problems first. By doing so, you teach others how to create. The benefit of that is having assistance with large scale projects. So, building them up helps you in the long run.

What Can You Do

In regards to character design, your options are limited. You can make clothes, but you can only select your gender, skin, eye, and hair color. The color pallet is fairly inclusive for a videogame. So I went for a Mocha Gojo appearance and named my character Nanami. To be clear she is named after Kamisama Kiss’s female protagonist; not Jujutsu Kiasin male sorcerer. My character is basically brown with white hair and blue eyes.

Although it’s a single player game, there’s a co-op option. I believe this only works on each players Isle of Awakening. Without their help, you’re at the mercy of Story Mode Islands and smaller islands that you can pillage for the fun of it. If your going at this blind like I did, it’ll take time to complete your first story mode islands.

You see, you don’t need blue prints to make buildings, but those buildings must meet certain criteria for the game to acknowledge your accomplishments. In the interest of time, I found a video that can set you up for success.

What Can’t You Do

Upgraded tools and weapons make a big difference. You can’t destroy items and materials that are stronger than your hammer or weapons. That can be frustrating. That’s why it’s important to explore. Deviating from the storylines objectives will help you level up. If your in it for creation, putting in time for destruction will make it easier to protect the towns your rebuilding. The Children of Hargon will attack irregularly. When you’ve made considerable progress, they’ll attempt to destroy everything. That’s without the mini boss/boss battles.

Plus, there’s simple puzzles that’ll help you earn tools that can’t be manifested by the apprentice builder. Yes, you’ll find some along the way, but the in-game map only shows where you’ve physically taken your character. So, there’s an incentive to develop your map, because there’s warp points scattered throughout. Finding these will help in the long run, because most of these objectives are far away, of you have to revise them.

Final Thoughts

If you’re familiar with my game preferences, Dragon Quest Builders 2 is a good time. I love creating, crafting, and cooking. During me-time, It’s a good way to zone out. There’s a sense of accomplishment that’ll keep you motivated. I did get stuck here and there, but I found a good walkthrough guide. I prefer reading over watching walkthroughs, because print is less distracting to me. Shout out to NeoSeeker’s walkthrough guide. It helped me get to Moonbrooke (Chapter 7) of this addictive game. Thanks for stopping by. Hope you’ll be back for Motivational Mondays with Trisha!
