What’s The Historical Premise For Gladiator II

So, we’ve seen teaser trailers for Gladiator II all over social media. It feels like we’re getting a Training Day Denzel Washington with the alluring Pedro Pascal. Let’s be honest Greek/Roman History inspired films that are rooted in action tend to do well. You’ve got the history enthusiast that like to point out inaccuracies; while others critique these movies for their plots.

Why Does Historical Premise Matter

History has a complicated relationship with literature. Dramatization can impact the credibility of a historical event, but numerical data without a narrative is dull. Background information isn’t necessarily rooted in fact. That’s why it’s tricky to leave it out. This is why  film writers can take creative liberty with dialogue and select scenes to help move the  plot along. After all, these films aren’t reenactments. Though bothersome, this isn’t the main issue.

The viewer decides what’s factual and what’s fictional. If the audience doesn’t take the time to fact check the plot, a person that chooses to view it as an accurate depiction of history will run with that and spread misinformation. Now, this may not seem like a big deal for ancient history, but it is something viewers should be mindful of.

What’s Going On?

For some context, I’ve included the first Gladiator Trailer. For those that haven’t seen it, it’ll give you an idea of who Maximus was to Rome and Lucius. Essentially, his loyalty to the dying emporer and political influence made him a target. Without giving too much away, Maximus becomes a gladiator. Though many would see this as a fall from grace, he becomes a threat that must be dealt with. So, why is there a sequel?

…Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake…

Gladiator II, Synopsis

Remember how I said historical premise matters? Well, the real Lucius Versus was not a gladiator. He was co-emperor with Marcus Aurelius. Yes, his father was a senator, but he became an adopted heir with Marcus Aurelius. The two subjugated other nations together. He passed away mid return from campaign in Germany. So, do with that information what you will.

Final Thoughts

Now that I know what this sequel is about, it was wise to wait so long for a sequel. Given Lucius physique, it appears about 20 years has passed. The first movie debuted 24 years ago. So, the audience has literally waited decades for it. Will the film live up to the hype it’s created? We’ll find out the week of Thanksgiving.
