It’s been a long road, but many of us have finally finished The Apothecary Diaries Season 2. There’s a sense of satisfaction from receiving 26 episodes again. With Season 3 confirmed, 26 episodes would be plenty of space to unfold Light Novel 5 and Light Novel 6. Fans that can and choose to read ahead of the anime have plenty of source material to consume. Just as a refresher, There are fifteen Light Novels available to read in English. If you use J-Novel to keep up with The Apothecary Diaries, you can read the E-Light Novel 16 by chapter as well. It updates about every 2-3 weeks. If you want to get straight to the meat and potatoes without the journey, I’ve got some Season Three’s plot points for you.
Locusts Are Physically Similar To Grasshoppers
The empire maybe facing a epidemic. There are signs that Maomao unexpectedly comes across before she’s brought into the fold. The timing isn’t great. A clan was recently eradicated. The Empress is foreign. If no preventative measures are taken, citizens may belive their hardships were brought on by those factors. The first sign of famin is an increase in grasshoppers. You see, Locust are consumed, but look similar to grasshoppers. This is why the Shi Clan arc was important.
It’s customary for this region to consume bugs. Even they dislike the taste of roasted grasshoppers. Since these insects have similar physical features, you can’t tell the difference without tasting them. How does this get back to the capital? Believe it or not, Locust are brought and sold in the Capitol too. An unsuspecting customer ends up with a gaggle of grasshoppers instead of locusts. They just so happen to be the Ladies of The Vedegres House.
The Mysterious Translucent Lady
Yes, that was a round about way or saying albino. A mysterious snake lady is captivating the capital’s entertainment district. So much so that Lahan and MaoMao decide to investigate. A hazy room is full of consumers in close proximity to each other. On the surface, things look like harmless fun, but Lahan and MaoMao aren’t convinced. There isn’t enough evidence to close the inquiry. Their visit seems to spook the entertainer, because she leaves the Capitol almost as discreetly as she arrived. I’ll be clear, this will be a game of cat and mouse in the most unexpected way. She’ll play a major roll in the fall of The Virtuous Consort as well.
The Quack Doc Brings Univited Guests
If your not familiar with the rear palace doctor, he was a cheerful person whose family suffered under the previous empress daweger. Their thriving paper business was impacted by the ban on cutting trees. Though they are still have a business relationship with the palace, this ban decreased their fulfillment capabilities abroad. After losing his older sister to the rear palace, the quack doctor volunteered to become a eunech. This selfless decision led to minimal contact with his family.
Because Eunechs are looked down upon in this society, his family back home has mixed feelings about. This isn’t the reason for the visit. His family doesn’t own the land that the paper is manufactured, a change of leadership are trying to push his family out and take over the paper industry. So why are Mao Mao and Jinshi there? Well there’s some shady financial numbers coming from these farmers that need and upfront and personal look. Also, the village was along the way of a further objective.
It’s Dangerous To Go Alone!
It would seem Lady Lishu is truly cursed. Her caravan is attacked by Bandits. MaoMao’s party was delayed by Paper Village side quest. Lady Lishu should have arrived at her family home ahead of MaoMoa and Master Jinshi. Unfortunetally for her, that’s not how things go. You see, Lady Lishu is a potential bridal candidate for Master Jinshi. The Emporer has no intention of bedding Her.
He made a point of protecting her from his predecessor. This is how she finds herself outside of the Rear Palace. Who knew she’d be placed in several life-threatening situations. On top of that, she’s treated like an illegitimate daughter at home. She wasn’t looking forward to her destination either. It seems she can’t escape people that detest her. What more can happen to this poor girl? Plenty. There’s plenty more this teenager will endure.
I’m So Lonely
Believe it or not, but 2/3 of this season will be spent outside or the palace. Goashuen won’t be there to guard Master Jinshi. In fact, he was the emperors milk mate. Due to the Ma clans history with the Ka Clan, he’s essentially back in his original role, which is staying by the empress side like Basen is learning to do for Master Jinshi. The Emporer is a little melancholy about it. After all, former wise consort is out and about as well. With the Moon Prince taking on an extended trip, he’s truly alone.
Kiss The Girl
Just incase you were wondering, Light Novel 5 ends with a steamy kiss between MaoMao and Jinshi. He’s upset because Mao Mao danced with a potential second male lead (strictly for romance elements) of the novel. We got a glimpse of him in the Mao Mao retrieval arc at the end of Season 2. He’s a looker with a nice personality. Lankan likes him and Mao Mao acts friendly towards him. Given Mao Mao’s personality, she doesn’t feel socially pressured to give others little to no attention. So her friendly behavior doesn’t go unnoticed.
On the flip side of that, MaoMao doesn’t understand that Jinshi has marked with a new hair stick. The one she wore to the banquet basically states, she’s a contender and series candidate for Jinshi’s heart. Since it’s been revealed that MaoMoa is a La Clan Princess, she’s a suitable match for him. She didn’t understand that her attendance and hairstick implied that. She’s not to pleased with this revelation. That being said, Jinshi makes it plain that he will finish what they started at the end of Season 2. Seeing no escape insight, she asserts dominance. After all, she was a Ward of the Verdagrese House.
Final Thoughts
We’ll get an important Jinshi reveal at our mid-season crossroads. To be clear, it will be the final nail on a widely accepted theory about Jinshi’s true identity. We won’t spend much time on it. After all, MaoMao conquered Jinshi. That’ll take him a bit of time to process. Plus, the lion’s desire to charge at Lady Lishu is very suspicious. If it wasn’t clear, Apothecary Diaries puts mystery above romance.
So, it is with a heavy heart that I must inform you, Light Novel Six will heavily focus on mystery and suspense from here on out. At least we’re getting world building and character development.
