Cooking with Trisha: Breakfast Smoothie

Seems like life is going on a fast pace. Regardless of your age, it feels like you don’t have time to the do the basics. For those of you who don’t like to eat breakfast, I have an alternative for you. Drink something full of fresh ingredients. Give your body something to burn. For those of you who don’t have time to hassle with a blender, don’t worry. Oyster has a blender that you’ll love. This Oyster blender comes with a lid, bottle, and blade head. Once your have your desired texture, unscrew the blade head and put your lid on it. Rinse the blade and sit it in the dishwasher. Sound easy enough right? If you need more than one, you can buy more bottles. I have an orange one for me and a blue one for Martin. We like different things in our shakes. So, instead of having to force yourself to finish a blender full of smoothie, you can make a serving perfect for you. These bottles go up to 750ml.

Making breakfast smoothies is a good way to get rid of perishable ingredients in your fridge. This recipe in particular came from fruit I need to finish pronto. As we all know, fruit and veggies have a short life span. Instead of wasting hundred of dollars on fruit and veggies a year, blend them into a drink you can take with you. Don’t be afraid to add veggies to your breakfast shake. Personally, I have to work to make sure I get all the veggies I need. I am very resistant to veggies I have not had before and I don’t like certain veggies cooked. This is a good way to make sure I am starting the day off right.

When your dealing with a small blender, you don’t need a lot of ingredients. Also, celery has no taste. Also it is full of empty calories. Remember, this vegetable can dehydrate you. So, keep a water bottle handy. Also apples and strawberries go great together. Don’t believe me? Go down the canned fruit aisle. You’ll see applesauce with strawberry in it. Peanut butter is a good source of protein. Calcium is very important. Adding the milk will give you good fats and the vitamin D your body needs. If you use milk in your breakfast smoothie, you can not make this ahead of time. You don’t want your smoothie to sour. Honey is a nice natural sweetener. If you don’t want to add sugar use honey. If honey is not sweet enough for you, substitute it with strawberry preserve.

When making shakes with an oyster blender. You’ll have to turn clockwise. Once your done, turn counter clockwise (right) to stop the blender and lift the bottle up. Most people stop blending after 130 seconds. How long you blend is entirely up to you. I usually blend for 3 minutes. I like my smoothie to be very fine.
