The aftermath of Black Friday and Cyber Monday made me want to address the elephant in the room. There are many families of varies backgrounds scaling down their holiday traditions. There’s a sense of loss and defeat that comes with that. For those that say material things shouldn’t hold that much emotional power, consider the givers feelings. Not the reciever.
There are those who show love through gift giving. Readers that think they should have budgeted better should think about this. Not all of those gift givers are last minute shoppers. Year long spikes in cost of living has impacted budgets to the point that people have had to use credit cards and savings account to keep up with daily expenses.
Funds typically allocated to gifts are taking a hit. Of course it’s important to prioritize needs over wants. That doesn’t mean that those choices aren’t accompanied by negative thoughts. Today, is an opportunity to acknowledge the disappointment. There’s a commercial expectation that everyone should be merry and bright right now. Lack of holiday cheer shouldn’t be surprising or ridiculed. If your feeling this way, I hope you feel seen. You are not alone.
