Manga to Anime: The Ice Guy And The Cool Girl

Sometimes, I’m in the mood for an animated romantic comedy.  The slow pace is refreshing, and misunderstandings don’t last five episodes for the sake of drama. The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague met that criteria. Based on the anime, Fuyutsuki is on her way to her first day of work. She’s gotten along cordially with others. Most think she has a nonchalant personality.  Her leisurely walks to work is stopped by a man litterally frozen in his tracks.

You see, Himuro is nervous about starting his first job as an adult. Due to his supernatural lineage, his emotional state is very obvious to others. Ice and snow are a daily occurrence for our descendant of an ice woman. The two try to figure out how they’ll get Himuro out of this pickle. Fuyutsuki desire to help defrosts Himuro legs. After a few polite words, the two part ways. Both wonder if they’ll ever see each other again. Like any romantic comedy,  the two were hired by the same company and work next to each other. What luck!

Sparks fly between the handsome descendant of a snow spirit and the oblivious coworker he has a crush on! A romantic comedy in an office setting that takes coworkers to lovers to new heights within a winter wonderland of emotions!

The Ice Guy and The Cool Girl, Series Info, Square Enix Manga & Books

I love how melodic this intro is. It really gives off the bright-eyed and bushy tailed nature of the Himuro, descendant of a snowwoman, and Fuyutsuki, a neutral toned woman

The One Season (12 Episode) Anime debuted on Crunchyroll in January 2023. It was adapted from the ongoing manga series The Ice Guy and The Cool Girl by Miyuki Tonogaya. The anime was so cute that I started reading the manga about two years ago. In fact, I borrowed the latest issue from Libby, a digital library.

More About The Ice Guy and The Cool Girl

The series of events is a bit scrambled up in the manga. If you read them in chronological order, you may notice they are animated out of order or completely removed from the anime. In my opinion, a lot of that comes down to storyboarding and what volumes were available at the time.

As of 2025, there are ten volumes. Just as a fair warning,  Himuro and Fuyutsuki don’t confess their feelings at the end of the anime. However, their journey goes beyond Season One and is worth reading. Fans will get the outcome they want, but I won’t tell you when it happens. Just know that unexpected circumstances will force Himuro to confess or let Fuyutsuki become the one that got away.

There’s Hope for More Seasons

Anime fans know that new anime releases seasonally, the type and popularity impact how many seasons they get. It’s frustrating that an abundance of source material doesn’t garuenty multiple seasons. That’s why we gotta run the numbers up and talk about these shows. In my opinion, Horimiya got a second season because it was constructively criticized for skipping large arcs of the manga.

Although it wasn’t a “will they won’t they anime”, the abundance of manga volumes made it clear that there was more to the story. It’s likely creators felt it’d get the one and done treatment.  So, they decided to ensure fans knew the outcome of the main couple. Thankfully, Horimiya Pieces is available to watch on Crunchyroll. I wouldn’t call it a Second Season, because we don’t see their lives after graduation, but there’s it makes Season One feel whole.

Final Thoughts

You see, anime is more than action it can be as ordinary or fantastical as it wants. It all comes down to source material. In general, many show come from Light Novels and manga/manhwa. Studios seem more keen to take on projects that already have a fan base. They can also bank on the obsessive nature of viewers to seek out source material between seasons. If anyone’s offended by that, I am one of those people.

Considering the significant relationship progression that happens in the manga, I’d love to get another season of The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague. The chances of that wish coming true isn’t high. Unfortunetally,  it’s not unusual for romantic slice of life anime to get more than one season; Especially, when its such a slow burn. That being said, office setting anime appears to be on the rise. Hopefully, we’ll get more of the story animated someday.

Sharing is caring! Let me know what you think.
