Small Appliances I am Thinking About Buying

Cooking daily can be cost effective and time consuming. Over the years, companies have created products that can cut that prep time down to the point that they are considered kitchen basics. Things like toasters, blenders, slow cookers fall into that group. These tools help you conserve energy and save time. Thats part of the reason takeout is so expensive. You paying others to cook for you on top of extra steps like customer service and packaging. Plus, what a restaurant can do in a short amount of time is more efficient then our own kitchens. That’s another reason small appliances do well. They put efficiency back in your hands. This doesn’t mean we need every small appliances out there. In my opinion, some of them are nice to haves, like these:

  • Food Processor – these are designed to chop or shredded food. I shredded my own cheese, as well as, chopping fresh vegetables. So this would be useful,  but im already doing this. These can be harder to clean than knives and cutting boards
  • Donut Maker – I’m talking about cake donuts not fried donuts. They sell cake donut baking pans now. So you dont really need these. I’m thinking about bjying it to make and decorating donuts with my kids. I’m not looking at it for weekly use
  • All in One Bread Maker – adding ingredients and watching it become bread without kneading it sounds good to me. The only time I’ve really dealt with yeast directly was making Pizza dough from scratch.  That was in my teen years. Bread prices get so out of control a Bread maker is a good investment. Still, you don’t need one of this magnitude. Truthfully, you only need a loaf pan to make sandwich bread at home. I know this  because I get served a lot of cooking reels
  • Deep Fryer with basket – in theory,  it would be easier to evenly fry food, but now your using more oil than you’d use stovetop frying. I’d imagine it would be a annoying to clean, because oil clings to everything. Just getting oil out of a measuring cup can take awhile.

  • Hard Boil Egg Maker – you know what’s annoying? Messing up a batch of hard boiled eggs. You cant save them and egg pricess are unpredictable. I’d get this just to get consistent results. I see this as a want, because you can make hard boiled eggs with a pot
  • Ice Cream Maker – These look nice, but most of these are very bulky. Honestly, buying ingredients for multiple no churn ice cream recipes would be much cheaper than buying an ice cream maker.
  • Ice Maker – we buy ice a lot during the summer. So, it would earn its keep. Still, I have some concerns.  How long does it take to make ice? Will I need to order additional parts to maintain it. If unforseen costs make it more trouble than its worth, I’d rather pay for convenience. That and ice trays are still available

You’ll notice, I tried to explain why these appliances would be useful in my home, but that doesn’t mean I should go through with buying them. If any of these sounded enticing to you, I think we need to be honest about something. How often will we use this? Is there currently enough space to make it easily accessible? If your aren’t flying solo, you should talk about this with your partner. This isn’t like buying more measuring spoons or replacing pot and pans. You’re garunteed to get your money’s worth out of these products. Not necessarily with small appliances.
