Reading is power. It is one of the ways we obtain knowledge. Carefully orchestrated words gives us the ability to explore places we may never see. If a picture says a thousand words, reading helps us comprehend the many narratives hidden within it. For a time, it was a self-care activity that I did not prioritize. If that doesn’t make sense, I’ll elaborate.
I love reading, but I wasn’t reading for the joy of it. It had to be transactional. For about four years, I was borrowing books from the library for self improvement, research proposals, or book reviews. I wasn’t reading for joy. I saw it as a waste of time. Why should I do something that doesn’t benefit my family or audience? Because reading just for me did not seem like a good reason.
Reading for the love of reading is not a waste of time. Sometime the mind wants to illustrate the world without help. For example, I was filling my reading void with Webtoons, because the creators took some of work out of reading. The artist did the heavy lifting with the illustrations and my mind followed the dialogue. Reading for the love of reading is not a waste of time. It’s important to make time for things that make you happy. At this point in my life, I can’t binge read whenever I want. Reading for me takes the pressure out of speed reading for others.
