After rewatching Your Lie in April, I was in the mood for a lighthearted RomCom. But what to watch? If your familiar with Your Lie in April, you may understand why I needed something adorably funny to stop the tears. Don’t get me started with My Hero Academia Season Six. The best use of a narrator clip reminded me Kaguya-sama: Love Is War was on my watchlist.
Truth be told, I noticed the show back in 2020, but an English Dub wasn’t available at the time. So, I clicked add to watchlist. Since I’m more likely to rewatch comfort anime than start a new series, it’s not hard to see why it took me so long to start Love is War. If you watched the clip above, I had to see how the narrator got to this point.

Love is a Battlefield…Seriously
Love confessions are supposed to be a monumental moment in a relationship. To Student council president Miyuki Shirogane and vice-president Kaguya Shinomiya it is a moment of victory and defeat. You see, the first person to confess is conquered and at the mercy of their conquerer.
Miyuki is a commoner whose work ethic allowed a transfer student to become student council president. Considering 99% of the private highschool student body is Japanese elite, his rise to the top is shocking and inspiring. Kaguya is a talented heiress, whose worth trillions. She’s basically japanese royalty. So, it’s not hard to see why neither wants to submit to the other.
As a result, our lovely narrator provides color commentary of their struggles to force one another into submission through constant battles and schemes. Since the narrator skipped 6-months of their initial conflict, Miyuki and Kaguya are dying to end the war and go out wit each other already. They just refuse to outright say it.

Manga, Live Action, and Ova; Oh My!
Turns out this battlefield is based on a Manga, which most likely explains the steady rate of seasons the anime has received thus far. Aka Akasaka wrote and illustrated Kaguya Sama: Love is War from 2015 to 2022. Since the manga officially ended last year, the anime won’t out pace the manga. Curious readers can get ahead of the curve, or enjoy the phycological ride.

Since the show strays away from the supernatural/fantasy trope, it’s much easier to convincingly adapt it to live action. Kaguya-Sama: Love is War was released im 2019. Two years later, the fandom received Kaguya-sama: Love Is War – Final (film) and Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunosen (TV Mini Series). The TV Mini Series was released two months before the second live action film.

Overall, the Kaguya-Sama: Love is War is doing so well that we’re getting an animated film too! It was announced at the Anime NYC 2022. Surprised fans got a world premiere screening (about 20 minutes) of Kaguya-sama: Love Is War — The First Kiss That Never.
What’s the Verdict
I haven’t finished Season One, but I’m fully invested in this war. So far, Miyuki Shirogane and Kaguya Shinomiya are at a standstill. Their more concerned about tripping the other person up than taking the first step towards a real relationship. I feel bad for the innocent bystanders but their comic relief is appreciated. In their own ways, student council secretary and treasurer try to move the relationship along. Plus, the whole schools ships the student council power couple and spread rumors about their nonexistent romantic relationship. In short, I look forward to seeing where this goes. It’s hard to get more than two seasons of a show like this. I’m glad the series has taken off like it has.
